Grassroots Democracy and Development Haiti

Amid widespread hunger and government collapse, the People’s Organization for the Development of Haiti (OPODHA) continues to organize and grow. More than 5,500 OPODHA members in 64 communities organized to generate income, make community improvements, and prevent conflict in the absence of a functioning government. OPODHA expanded its Mutual Solidarity Loan Funds to 57 communities, with $70,837 in member contributions. Farmers in six communities were able to plant high-quality seeds for a second planting season as a result of the pilot Northeast Haiti Community Seed Bank. The Inter-American Foundation agreed to provide three years of funding for the Seed Bank and OPODHA’s agricultural campaign to help 22,000 small-scale farmers in Northeast Haiti adapt to drought and climate change. Through a Way Forward in Haiti, OPODNE and Faith in Action International are working with the Haitian Diaspora to press for better U.S. policies toward Haiti. Support grassroots organizing in Haiti
