Latin America: Your support is growing grassroots organizing

Ten years ago, COFOA was working in just one department in El Salvador. Today, Faith in Action grassroots organizing has expanded nationwide, with 150 leadership teams active in 11 departments, and is now taking root in Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. We’ve also been invited to explore organizing in Colombia and Peru.

This remarkable growth has been made possible by the power of connection. Local faith-based leadership teams are using a shared organizing model to win improvements in their communities—new schools, clinics, roads, electricity, and water systems—while joining together across regions to influence national policy. Through the RENACER (REBIRTH) campaign, leaders are pressing for property titles worth over $1 billion for 350,000 Salvadoran families and playing a key role in defending water, healthcare, and environmental protections.

Much of this expansion has come through intentional learning processes. For the past five years, Faith in Action has hosted international Learning Exchanges, where staff and leaders visit El Salvador to strengthen skills and share strategies. More recently, in-person and virtual train-the-trainer programs have enabled leaders to take on greater responsibility for growing their teams. Experienced COFOA organizers are now mentoring new efforts in Honduras and Guatemala, while helping launch explorations in Colombia and Peru.

At the same time, Faith in Action is countering divisive immigration narratives by connecting grassroots and faith leaders across the U.S., Mexico, and Central America through the Root Causes Initiative. Together, these leadership tables are challenging unjust policies and lifting up the real stories of families impacted by deportations, detention, and repression.
