2015 Year in Review: Capotille Leaders Create a Future for Their Children
Capotille is a rural village in Haiti just across the troubled border with the Dominican Republic. PICO-trained leaders established a peanut cooperative to prevent exploitation of farmers by loan sharks. Leaders like Jose Arpin have set a high standard for participation, requiring that co-op members join in all PICO activities. Entire families work together to plant, weed, and harvest their crops. With $3,000 invested in seed, 130 families shared in $9,000 of peanut sales. Equipment to dry, store, and process their peanuts would allow them to do even more.
