2015 Year in Review: Phaeton Leaders Learn to Fish for a Living
Born in Phaeton, Dr. Clonel Lewis was inspired to study medicine when he saw his grandfather die without medical care. He returned home from medical school to operate the pharmacy and health center he used as a small boy. But for him, health starts with people earning enough to feed their family. He works with villagers to operate a fishing cooperative. With a small grant, members of the co-op bought a small boat and named it PICO. Fishermen go out early each morning and fish until noon. They market their catch on the beach. On a good day, the cooperative can net a profit of $200; on a poor day, only $50. They could double their profit if they had a motor for their boat and refrigerator. Additional income would mean that more men and women would stay in Phaeton.
