Help Haitians feed themselves
It’s hard to watch Elon Musk and the new Administration dismantle U.S. foreign aid. We’ve criticized USAID for not working enough with local organizations. But we also know USAID provides lifesaving health and nutrition to vulnerable people. Many will suffer and die as a result of aid cuts.
One impact on our work is that the People’s Organization for the Development of Haiti (OPODHA) lost $217,500 in funding from the Inter-American Foundation for its Northeast Haiti Community Seed Bank. With more than half of Haitians hungry, the Seed Bank is a lifeline that enables farmers to feed their families and neighbors.
You can help OPODHA deal with lost funding by donating to a special fund to support its agriculture campaign. Donations will provide farmers with high quality seeds and guidance from agronomists to adapt their crops to drought and climate change. Your support will help restore the capacity of Haitians to feed themselves.
The funding that OPODHA lost was a direct result of its campaign — WE PLANT TODAY SO WE CAN FEED OURSELVES TOMORROW — to change USAID’s agriculture policy in Haiti to emphasize local production and make Haitians less dependent of food assistance.
We appreciate everyone who participated in that campaign and encourage you to keep working for a compassionate world in which we act as sisters and brothers.
