Africa: Local leaders are learning how to expand organizing in Ghana

FAITH in Ghana Alliance held a “Train the Trainers” retreat in Techiman, Ghana to prepare thirty lay people and clergy to train and coach local multi-faith teams. The Alliance currently supports multi-faith organizing efforts in 29 communities in ten of Ghana’s 16 regions. But more communities and regions are asking for help getting started. To continue growing, FAITH in Ghana needs more leaders who are able to train and coach new teams, which was the focus of the three day retreat. Each participant, at the closing session made a commitment to undertaking concrete actions to spread grassroots organizing in Ghana. Zan Akologo, the National Coordinator of the FAITH in Ghana Alliance, Vivian Ihekoronye, lead organizer with ISAIAH in Minnesota, and Gordon Whitman of Faith in Action Network worked together to organize and facilitate the training. In June, FAITH in Ghana Alliance celebrated obtaining official legal status as an organization in Ghana.
