Archbishop Alas joins “Cuidemos la Casa de Todos¨” coaliton to press for a national water law
Water pollution in El Salvador is at a critical level. Industry is unregulated and chemicals are released directly into rivers. Years of effort to insure water as a human right and prevent privatization has gone unheeded because of political polarization. A new coalition called ¨Cuidemos la Casa de Todos” has formed to take on this fight. Salvadoran Archbishop José Luis Escobar Alas has voiced support on behalf of the Catholic Church for legislation written by the Jesuit University of Central America. COFOA and coalition members including CRS, Caritas, and others will present the proposed legislation to the Legislative Assembly. “We believe no Deputy should be elected who does not support a constitutional amendment that makes water a human right,” says COFOA director, Alberto Velazquez.
