New organizing in San Juan Opico
In the small rural community of San Juan Opico, COFOA leaders are working with Fr. Javier Miranda, parish priest of San Juan Evangelista Church, in the Buena Vista and Veracruz communities to access water for 600 families. They are exploring the formation of a “Junta de Agua/Water Committee” as the needed legal structure to build a water delivery system. Communities throughout El Salvador are seeing water rights provided to large commercial and real estate developers, while local communities are denied access. The national coalition fight against continued privatization faces stiff head winds as the newly elected President Bukele responds to corporate interests. Meanwhile in St. Rose of Lima Parish, communities in Conacaste, Loma Santa Lucia and other neighborhoods are pushing the mayor for road improvement and a pedestrian overpass on the national highway.
