New organizing in Soyopango
In Soyopango, Karla Arevinar is working with Brother Juan Beltran and leaders at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in the “Third of January” community. After community training sessions, leaders are doing door-to-door visits with families to listen to their concerns. Garbage, water and violence are the main issues. Many people are say get water only one or two days a week and that is not enough to bathe, wash clothes, and cook. They are planning a community wide forum to plan action that might include taking their dirty dishes and clothes to the offices of ANDA, the national water service provider. St. Francis is served by the Franciscan order, widely known for their environmental activism. A similar outreach effort is happening at St. Paul the Apostle Anglican Church in the Amatepec neighborhood in Soypango.
