Nyange Builds a Home for Mukamuganga, Plan Their Future
On land secured in an agreement with local government, the women of the Nyange cooperative are building a house for Mukamuganga, one of the poorest women in the community. They have shaped, baked and carried 1600 roofing tiles from the valley floor to the road side location where electricity will soon be available. This is the second house they have completed. Most members of this cooperative are women widowed or abandoned because of the genocide. Now these leaders are utilizing the PICO model of organizing to take control of their own lives; shaping and executing a plan to move themselves and their families out of poverty. Step by step, they are building a future where they can couple their own resources of organizing, land and labor with resources of electricity and technology to make enough roofing tiles for market in the bigger cities.
